  • Lead Sailing Instructor

    Job Description

    M-Th 8:30-4:30

    June 1- August 20

    Work with Summer Sail Camp Director and Assistant Instructor to provide a safe, fun learning environment for up to 12 children ages 8- 18 at Lake Nighthorse in Durango Colorado. Lead Sailing Instructor will assist in basic sailing instruction primarily on Sunfish and Laser sailboats. Duties include:

    -Demonstrate sailing and water safety

    -Demonstrate environmental stewardship

    -Teach sailing principals including parts of boat, rigging, weather, points of sail, capsize drills, docking and disembarking

    -Provide support for students as they acquire sailing skills at their own pace

    -Maintain keen observation of all vessels, students and weather

    -Communicate with Director any incidences, including equipment issues

    -Communicate student progress, celebrations and needs with parents as needed

    -Support Director in general operations (boat storage, equipment inventory, Etc)

    This position will require a full time commitment weekly for each session that candidate is available to work. This is a Monday thru Thursday 8:30- 4:30/ week position.

    Ideal candidate will have experience leading in an outdoor education environment, experience sailing or teaching sailing, ability to attain CPR Certification by June 1, and complete a background check by June 1. Candidate will be expected to work in a physically dynamic capacity in and out of the water and in the elements 100% of the time. This is a high intensity, hands on position, that requires laughter and high attention to surroundings. Candidate must have a flexible mindset and positive disposition.

  • Assistant Sailing Instructor

    -Provide support for students as they acquire sailing skills at their own pace

    -Maintain keen observation of all vessels, students and weather

    -Communicate with Lead Sailing Instructor any incidences, including equipment issues

    -Assist in repairs, equipment storage, launching and retrieving vessels

    -Communicate student progress, celebrations and needs with parents as needed

    -Support Director in general operations (boat storage, equipment inventory, Etc)

    This position will require a full time commitment either for each weekly session that candidate is available to work. This is a Monday thru Thursday 8:30- 4:30 position. Ideal candidate may choose to work some sessions and not others.

  • Race Team Coach

    Advanced Skills Development Leader

    Friday 2-6pm

    Pay DOE

    Lead on the water sailing instruction for beginner and novice competitive sailors ages 8-18 at Lake Nighthorse in Durango, CO.

    -Create and instruct a curriculum to advance skills for Laser and Sunfish sailors

    -Travel to regional regattas to coach team

    -Manage small group of dedicated youth sailors

    -Maintain equipment

    Ideal candidate will have experience racing small boats.

    There is room for growth within this position assisting in creating a community sailing program for Durango.

  • Safety Boat Leader

    Job Description

    M-Th 8:30-4:30

    June 1- August 20

    Operate trailer motor boat with outboard engine on Lake Nighthorse to support Summer Sail Camp students and staff, as well as monitor all Peaks and Tides daily programming. This position is critical to the safety of the summer sail camp program. The safety boat will hold all essential equipment for all of the daily sail programs, sail camp students personal belongings, all first aid equipment. The vessel acts as a patrol vessel, floating first aid station, floating dock, lead boat in drills, a weather station, and hub for all program communication. Duties include:

    -Keep track of time for program

    -Keep track of weather forecast, micro weather observations, barometer readings, crowds, sail camp vessels, and potential hazards

    -Provide support to Lead Sailing Instructor in organizing games, sailing courses, lunch breaks, first aid

    -Communicate with Program Director, Director of operations, Lead Sailing Instructors and park staff

    -Maintain record of incident reports and daily “Captain’s Log”

    -Maintain boat cleanliness, motor fueling, and report any maintenance needs to director on a daily basis

    Ideal candidate will have a keen eye for detail and astute observation skills. Knowledge of local wind and weather patterns preferred. Experience operating a variety of marine vessels preferred. Ability to attain CPR certification and background check by June 1 required. This position requires 100% of the hours to be outside and in the elements from 8 am to 5 pm Monday thru Thursday. A guide mindset with safety as a primary concern is required. Outdoor leadership experience is a bonus. A positive disposition, team attitude and flexible mindset is required.
